No Shabos Zmiros this week. I’m reading a wonderful piece of non-fiction right now called Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean. In it, I found on page 8, this delightful quote:
Sugar and piracy transformed Recife into the richest trading port in the New World outside of Havana, and Jews, integral participants in both industries, lived a high life. Their favorite pastimes may be glimpsed form what they outlawed: Synagogue leaders banned card playing on Friday afternoon (as too many members missed Sabbath services), and levied whopping fines on members caught taking Christian women in the mikvah, the ritual bath.
