Liturgical oops @ LimmudPhilly.

This is one of my rare attempts at mobile blogging from my phone.

I’m at LimmudPhilly. I took this pic moments ago during havdalah. On the left, Naomi Less. On the right, Chana Rothman. They’re both friends of mine so this isn’t to poke fun at them.

BUT, first commenter to find the liturgical oops in this picture gets special brownie (ball)points.

  1. I think you’re probably referring to the absence of בין ישראל לעמים (the transliteration is coming out with too little contrast, so I can’t make it out in the picture). My bet is that it’s quite intentional: a large segment of liberal Judaism has philosophical issues with Jews’ differentness/chosenness and expunges references to it from the liturgy.

  2. Efraim – not that it’s absent in the Hebrew, but the person who cut-and-pasted the transliteration didn’t remove it from that. Groan; if people are going to hack about with the liturgy, at least do it well.

  3. Wow, I can barely tell there’s anything on the screen.

  4. Holy ambivalent. Should it stay or should it go?
